Loong Lek (Uncle Lek’s) Boat Noodle

Loong Lek (Uncle Lek’s) Boat Noodle

When talking about recommended restaurants in Ayutthaya, boat noodles must definitely be included on the list. Uncle Lek’s Boat Noodle also serve grilled bananas, coconut milk ice cream, tender satay, and of course, authentic Ayutthaya boat noodles.

What is unique about their boat noodle is their broth which is mixed with coconut milk instead of the usual blood, which gives the soup a creamy fragrance (plus it’s much healthier). Initially, we thought it wouldn’t be a good mix, however after tasting it, I can say that it tastes absolutely delicious!

Be aware that as a well-known noodle shop situated not far from attractions such as Wat Ratchaburana and the historical park, the place is usually packed during lunch breaks.

Let’s change the scene and try out a “Khanom Jeen” (fermented rice flour noodles) menu. The killer menu lies in the freshness of their noodles. It can be eat with a variety of curries, such as the northeastern spicy fermented fish paste, crab paste, green curry, or the authentic northern “khanom jeen nam ngiao” (rice noodles with spicy pork sauce).

And indispensable to every khanom jeen restaurants, is the “fak thong khaeng bout” (steamed pumpkin cooked in coconut milk and sugar) dessert, which many people testify that it shouldn’t be missed.

This restaurant is very well-known and usually crowded during noontime. Service levels might drop a bit.

Tha Luang Restaurant

Tha Luang Restaurant
ร้านท่าหลวง

We have already been to this place 3 times. The food is delicious and the price is reasonable. Our favorite dishes include grilled prawns with chili salt, Tom Pu Kong, stir-fried snakehead fish, and stir-fried pigeon!?

We recommend that you visit the restaurant in the evenings as the atmosphere along the Pa Sak River is more relaxed with boats lazily floating down the river. Some of their staff may look rather fearsome but that’s just the way they are.

The restaurant has a parking lot in a very small alley. Look carefully for the sign which is situated opposite the TMB Thanachart Bank. The parking lot owner will initially collect the parking fee, but you can reimburse it from the restaurant.

De Riva Ayothaya

De Riva Ayothaya
De Riva Ayothaya

A restaurant on the Chao Phraya River decorated with beautiful lanterns. There are both outdoor zones and air-conditioned rooms and is located opposite St. Joseph’s Church. Evenings are the best time to visit, to see its colorful lights and indulge in its quaint and relaxed atmosphere.

Generally their food is flavorful and not intensely spicy, making it easy on the taste buds. However, there also highly spicy dishes, such as the fried pork with cumin leaves. Be warned, it’s absolutely hot and spicy. I gave up as I couldn’t finish it.

Ya-Chit Hoi Tod (Fried Mussels)

A 100-year-old fried mussels recipe that we accidentally came across this in Google Maps while we were writing this post. The shop only sells fried mussels, not so greasy while still crispy with an abundance of mussels. I’ll be definitely be visiting you Grandma on my next trip to to Ayutthaya.

Ayutthaya Retreat

Ayutthaya Retreat
Ayutthaya Retreat

Ayutthaya Retreat is a café cum restaurant in a traditional Thai house style accommodation. Its charm comes from a lotus pond situated in the middle of the compound, which is not only charming but also helps to reduce heat in the surrounding area. An air-conditioned room is also available.

The restaurant offers both Thai food and desserts. The recommended menu is the coconut cake. Many voices say that this restaurant may not be the best, but I can assure you that the atmosphere and photo corners are definitely plentiful.

Suriyan Chandra Ayutthaya

Suriyan Chandra Ayutthaya
Suriyan Chandra Ayutthaya

A restaurant in Ayutthaya that has been converted from an old mill. It is highly recommended that advance reservations be made for this restaurant. The highlight is the retro river cruise service, its traditional food, scenic river view, and a plumply dog who is extremely friendly.

Suriyan Chandra Ayutthaya

It takes about 2 hours for a boat trip where they also stop to allow patrons to pay homage to the Lord Buddha and let their stress flow away with the river. When you reach the pier, there will be attractively decorated Thai food waiting for you that is served in a very prompt manner.

However, as the food was prepared in advance, it was already quite cold. Personally, I think that this restaurant is not so outstanding for its food, but is rather complimented by the experience.

Ayutthayarom

Ayutthayarom

A shady restaurant in a traditional Thai-style house by the Chao Phraya River. The atmosphere is enhanced with traditional Thai music which takes you back in time 100-200 years.

Located directly opposite is the Sri Suriyothai Pagoda, where the view is absolutely stunning during sunsets. The Thai Central style food is flavorful and not intensely spicy. There are traditional dishes such as Lar Tiang (stir fried prawns covered with egg netting), Moo Sarong (fried pork balls wrapped in noodles), Khanom Hua Larn (Southern style steamed flour stuffed with steamed minced green peas), as well as, the famous grilled giant river prawns.

Hia Klae Satay + Achiw Seafood Restaurant

Hia Klae Satay

This satay shop is more than 40 years old. From the outer appearance, you know that it’s definitely delicious. Sweet pork satay uses fatless meat, but is not too dry. At the end of the wooden skewers, they also include a bit of pork fat to please people who crave collagen.

Another highlight is the grilled innards, which are both tender and fragrant, without the pungent smell. Satay is to be dipped in a peanut dipping sauce with a mild curry paste (a bit on the oily side).

Achiw Seafood Restaurant

Achiw Seafood
This restaurant is located right next to Hia Klae Satay. Both shops look equally magical so we tried them both.

We tried out the stir-fried beef with kaffir lime leaves, which consisted of salted tender pork slices, a little spiciness, with a good aroma of basil and kaffir lime leaves. Complete the dish with hot steamed rice. Unfortunately, I didn’t try their seafood menu.

Khrua Taan Restaurant

Khrua Taan Restaurant

Let’s cap our trip to the best restaurants in Ayutthaya with an authentic low-profile Thai restaurant which resembles a cafeteria.

There are an assortment of difficult to find menu items, such as Saeng Wha Koong (spicy river prawn salad), stir fried pork with cumin leaves, and stir fried kale with salted fish. What is unique with this latter dish, is that they stir fry the kale without any cooking oil and garnish it with salted fish and fried garlic. It’s absolutely super delicious.

A Review of Teppen Thonglor. A Japanese grill restaurant with free salad buffet.

A Review of Teppen Thonglor. A Japanese grill restaurant with free salad buffet.

Teppen Thonglor, a Japanese grill restaurant which focuses on premium grilled beef. Their current promotion includes a free salad buffet with every order (unlimited salad helpings just like Sizzler). However, they don’t serve sushi anymore. That’s quite regrettable.

Teppen Thonglor

The restaurant has established an objective of wanting to provide happiness among their customers, by starting from welcoming them like VIP guests, as well as, grilling demonstrations. Their chef will even provide table side demonstrations for some menu items.

But what impresses us the most is when we leave the restaurant after our meal. They will carry a sign to bid us goodbye just like in the photo. As for the person waving his hand is non other than Mr. Takao, CEO of Teppen Thailand. Now, that’s what I call customer relations!!

How to grill beef Teppen-style

How to grill beef Teppen-style
  • First, we have to wait for the fire to heat up a bit.
  • If the beef is thinly sliced, just put it on the grill for 5-6 seconds, then flip it over for the same amount of time, and it’s done.
  • If the beef is slightly thicker, place it on the grill for about 20 seconds, or if you notice that the uncooked side starts to appear juicy, just flip it over and wait for another 20 seconds, and you’re done.
  • It is not recommended to turn the beef over several times as it will dry out the juiciness, making it hard and not tasty.

How to Grill Beef Tongue

  • Beef tongue is the hardest part to cook and has to be grilled a bit longer. It can be turned over back and forth several times without it drying up. The staff mentioned that, “no matter how you grill it, it’s still delicious”.

A Review of Japanese grill restaurant, for beef lovers.

Wagyu Karubi

Wagyu Karubi

290 baht. For aficionados who like tender grilled beef without the excessive fattiness, this is the menu for you. It comes already marinated in sauce and all you have to do is just grill it. Absolutely perfect! No extra sauce dipping is necessary. If you like to try tender grilled beef, don’t hesitate to order this dish. Don’t forget to accompany it with their salad buffet. Guaranteed to be worth every baht (will the restaurant hate me for this, ha ha ^^).

Shape Of Wagyu

Shape Of Wagyu
Shape Of Wagyu

1,200 baht. If you’re unsure what each kind of wagyu is, just order this dish and you’ll get every part of the Wagyu Beef, from the mid-tongue, fore-tongue, chuck, round, sirloin, flank, ribs, short loin, and followed by the premium Teppen egg, which is a pickled egg with a firm texture, slight soft salty taste which can be eaten as a snack or accompany your beef dish.

The right way to partake in this dish is to start from the less fatty meat and finish the meal with parts with a higher fat content. This is so that your meal will not be too greasy. After listening to their explanation, a student like me didn’t pay attention to it much. I just select the meat parts randomly. Turns out that it was not so greasy at all ^^.

Wagyu Yakisuki With Premium Egg

Wagyu Yakisuki With Premium Egg
Wagyu Yakisuki With Premium Egg

390 baht. A large piece of thinly sliced Wagyu beef, served on a chic Mount Fuji-shaped plate. Quickly grill the meat on the stove and dunk in a premium grade raw egg that is both soft and creamy, without the raw egg smell. Moisten the beef completely and eat it while it’s hot. Absolutely delicious. But be warned this dish is on the chewy side, and not so soft and melty.

Wagyu Sirloin Yukke

Wagyu Sirloin Yukke
Wagyu Sirloin Yukke

980 baht. This is the best A5 beef in Thailand!! You can take it raw, or you can request for a bit of aburi (scorching). Either way, they’re absolutely great! The way to eat it is to beat the egg, pour the sauce, mix and then just put it in your mouth.

Wow! It just melts in your mouth, without any pungent smell. The taste is enhanced by the sweet and salty oiliness of the egg, the aroma of the sauce, and balanced out with the garlic and spring onions. Absolutely out of this world!

Sirloin (Tokujo Rosu)

Sirloin (Tokujo Rosu)

480 baht. This part is tender, but also interspersed with a few chewy parts. While eating, you will get the sensation of fat bursting in the mouth. It comes with a light meaty scent. Personally, I like this dish the least.

Reimen

Reimen
Reimen

270 baht. A large serving of cold noodles. Soft and sticky noodles in a sesame oil aromatic soup with a slight sweet and saltiness taste. Cool and refreshing, and should be taken with the restaurant’s special marinated sauce that smells a bit like sake which makes it a lot tastier.

Mont Blanc

Mont Blanc

480 baht. End your meal with a large serving of Mont Blanc. It consists of light puffs and nuts at the bottom, topped with Catalana, a vanilla ice cream pudding, dark chocolate bread, and imparts a slight saltiness taste, and topped with soft pumpkin cream (usually it’s purple sweet potato cream). It looks like a huge serving but it’s actually a light dessert that’s easy to eat.

Salad Buffet

Salad Buffet at Teppen Thonglor
Salad Buffet at Teppen Thonglor

Free, with every order. Unlimited salad servings. They have three kinds of homemade salad dressings; with ingredients such as apples and olive oil. I like their cheese which stays true to its substance from its smell and taste. It’s very satisfying. Currently, there may not be many vegetable options to choose from but (hopefully) there will be a wider selection to choose from in the future.

Types of sauce dips available

Types of sauce dips available

There are 3 types of dipping sauces available; the salty chilli sauce, not so spicy, and can be used to balance out the greasiness, the yakiniku sauce is salty and sweet, the marinade is very aromatic (I like this one best), and the sesame oil sauce with chopped spring onions. Lovers of wasabi can request it from the staff.

Parking at Teppen Thonglor

  • Park at The Taste Thonglor
  • Validate your parking at the restaurant: 3 hours free parking, 20 baht / hour for 4th – 6th hour.
  • 100 baht/hour if parking is not validated. WOW!!

Conclusion

Teppen Thonglor

+ Excellent beef. Absolutely worth its price.
+ Wagyu Yakisuki or Wagyu Karubi, are not so pricey and you can still enjoy the tenderness.
+ Staff are friendly and energetic.
+ Unlimited helpings to the salad.
= Parking available, but the number of space is limited.
– Wish that the salad had a little more choices.
– Quite pricey.
